The Garden of Eden

The first trees mentioned in the Garden of Eden were a source of visual pleasure and physical nourishment for Adam and Eve. Other trees acknowledged to be present in Eden were the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

There were two kinds of food in the Garden of Eden. One is physical which Adam and Eve gathered from vegetation to nourish their body. The other is spiritual food, fruit of words fed into the heart or spirit. The tree of life is spiritual fruit from the Word of God, which will be further explained later by scripture. The tree of knowledge of good and evil is spiritual fruit of damnable words that cause death. The entity of this deadly tree is also identified through scripture. There is more about this revealed later. Man’s need for spiritual food, which should only come from the Word of God, was first revealed to the people of Israel.

God teaching the people of Israel about spiritual food

Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

The time came when Christ reiterated the above verse in verbal combat with Satan after 40 days of fasting. The tempter deploys a familiar method designed to compromise souls into sinning against God. Satan’s tactic against Christ was to tempt Him to appease the flesh and obey verbal commands in disobedience to God. Christ rejected the words of Satan and spoke with obedience to the Word of God.

Matthew 4:3-4 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

The Fall of Adam and Eve

The cradle of mankind was set in paradise, the Garden of Eden. The fall of Adam and Eve meant that their offspring, all mankind, only knew an existance in exhile from paradise. I begin with events that happened not long after God had created Adam:

Genesis 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Using one of Adam’s ribs, God created Eve to be his wife. Both were free to eat fruit from the tree of life up to this point. Although Eve received the same words of warning concerning the tree of knowledge of good and evil, she was tempted to disobey God.

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

By God’s divine omniscience, He referred to the source of corrupt words spoken by Adam as being personified by asking: “who told thee”, in the following verse.

Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

Eve was persuaded by the appearance of the tree of knowledge of good and evil along with the lure of advertised benefits if one eats its fruit. As for how was it that the appearance of the tree was particularly attractive to her, it is described in detail with decoration of fine jewels in the book of Ezekiel.

Ezekiel 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

If you haven't figured it out yet from the above Bible verses, it is the description of Satan who was first called Lucifer, the cherub angel who rebelled against God. He is often referred to as the serpent among other names.

Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Revelation 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

Satan is the persona of the tree of knowledge of good and evil who committed spiritual murder by the fruit of his words fed to Eve who than fed it to Adam. They lost their innocence by a corrupt conscious perceiving things according to Satan and having disturbing thoughts and feelings they never knew. The spiritual offspring of Satan are the captives of fallen mankind yielding more dead and corrupt trees. Christ made the spiritual state of man known while attempting to enlighten religious leaders.

John 8:38-44 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Often it is not understood that the fruit of spoken words defiled Adam and Eve spiritually; not by physical fruit that enters the belly. Some religious zealots thought that spiritual defilement came by eating unclean food. Christ refuted the belief that food can defile one spiritually.

Matthew 15:10-20 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

The consequences of mankind inheriting spiritual corruption through Adam and Eve is a disaster. Yet God had salvation of man in mind when He banned Adam and Eve from taking fruit of the Tree of Life. That would have made their condition including the sinful state of all mankind irreversable.

Genesis 3:22-24 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
